AOL freezing when opening Abode Reader document: "There was an error opening the document. The file could not be found"

This problem seem to have been plaguing AOL users, running XP ever since upgrading Adobe Reader to version 8.0 and manifest itself by freezing AOL when trying to open downloaded pdf attachments. Upon restarting AOL and when attempting to open it again you get the "There was an error opening the document. The file could not be found" message.

My client has a laptop running XP Media Center edition, with most recent windows updates and using AOL version 9.0. I’ve been searching multiple forums; including adobeforums.com for a workable solution and to date I haven’t found one. I was able to, however, find a workaround that might have been pointed out by someone in one of the forums. Here’s what I’ve done:

Initially I removed Adobe Reader 8.1.0, restarted Windows and installed Adobe Reader 7.0. Still no go.

Then I removed Adobe Reader 7.0 and ‘went back in time’ and installed Adobe Reader 6.0. Viola, it worked like a charm!

Although, it’s not most elegant fix, it works for my client so far.

Let’s hope someone finds a true fix that addresses this so annoying problem soon.

Good luck to all.

Edit:

You might ask where did I get Adobe Reader version 6.0.

Sure, I downloaded it from file hippo and I uploaded it here as well in case one of my clients needs it again: http://www.philadelphia-wedding-photography.com/download/AdobeReader6.0/AdbeRdr60_enu.exe

Also, keep in mind not to upgrade Adobe Reader to any higher version until official fix is found and published. I believe you can set Adobe Reader preferences not to check/install new updates.
